Team Sports for Kids

There’s something magic about a team that clicks. The shout when someone scores. The huddle before a match. The friend you make on the first day who’s still your teammate three seasons later.

Team sports give kids more than fitness — they teach them how to show up for each other. How to win without showing off and lose without falling apart. How to listen to a coach, trust a teammate, and find their place in something bigger than themselves. These are skills that follow them well beyond the pitch or the court.

Abu Dhabi has a brilliant range of team sports clubs for kids — from football and rugby to basketball and beyond. Whether your child is just starting out and wants to give something new a go, or they’re ready to train seriously and compete, there’s a club here for them. Most welcome complete beginners, and the best ones make every child feel like they belong from day one.

FAQ

Your questions answered

What age can my child start team sports?

Most clubs welcome kids from around age 4 or 5, with sessions designed to be playful and low-pressure at that age — think fun games and basic movement rather than drills and tactics. From around 7 or 8, sessions tend to get a little more structured, with proper training and sometimes friendly matches. The focus at every age stays on enjoyment first.

Often, yes — and sometimes surprisingly so. Team sports give shy kids a shared goal to focus on, which takes the pressure off having to “be sociable.” Many parents tell us their quieter child came out of their shell faster on a football pitch than anywhere else. That said, it’s worth visiting a session first to get a feel for the coach’s style and the group dynamic.

It varies a lot, and that’s a good thing — there’s genuinely something for every child. Some clubs are relaxed and social, others train seriously and enter leagues or tournaments. Most providers are upfront about this, and it’s always worth asking before you sign up so your child’s experience matches what they’re looking for.

For a first taster session, most clubs just ask kids to wear comfortable sports clothes and trainers. Sport-specific kit (boots, shin pads, etc.) usually only comes into play once your child has decided they want to stick with it. Check with the provider when you get in touch — most are happy to advise.
